Social media was recently abuzz following a viral video showing a Catholic priest overcome with emotion during Mass on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
While early reports online speculated that a visible Eucharistic miracle had taken place, church leaders have since clarified the nature of the event.
The video captured Father Brent Bowman during a school Mass on September 14 at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church in Hopkins, Minnesota. Serving as chaplain for the local Chesterton Academy, Father Bowman became visibly emotional during the Eucharistic Prayer, struggling to lift the chalice during the consecration of the Blood.
Initial social media posts suggested that the consecrated wine had physically changed into blood.
Catholic author Patrick O’Hearn, who originally posted the video, later issued a public correction after conferring with parish representatives. O’Hearn confirmed that Father Bowman did not witness any physical change in the appearance or taste of the wine and apologized for promoting claims of a “possible Eucharistic miracle.”
Father Paul Haverstock, the Parish Priest of St. Gabriel the Archangel, addressed the incident during a homily the following day. After speaking with Father Bowman, Haverstock explained that the priest experienced a profound personal spiritual grace rather than an external physical sign.
According to Father Haverstock, Father Bowman received an intense “experiential knowledge” of Christ’s sacrifice, feeling the weight and reality of Christ’s blood shed for humanity so deeply that he temporarily struggled to lift the chalice.
“I spoke with him this morning to ask him about his experience, and he said that he had just had (…) this gift of an experiential knowledge of knowing on a deeper level that truly Christ’s blood was shed for us and that its weight is profound,” said Fr Paul.
“And it was so much that he even had difficulty or found it impossible to lift up the chalice for a time and was overcome, as those of you who were there yesterday witnessed,” he added.
While clarifying that no physical transformation occurred, parish leaders emphasized that the moment serves as a powerful reminder of Catholic teaching: that every Mass contains the miracle of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
“So there was not an external visible Eucharistic miracle that occurred, but there was a particular grace that God decided to give to Father Brent. I don’t doubt that the Lord was the source of that and that Father Brent, by celebrating Mass here, shared it with all of you,” Fr Paul noted.
